Police say a 17-year-old Saanich teen knows the masked man who attacked her and tried to toss her into a van near her Gordon Head home Monday night.
Kian Chong, 34, is charged with four offences in connection with the attempted abduction and an ensuing assault on the teen’s friend, who intervened and helped her escape.
Chong, who works at a Victoria restaurant, appeared in a telebail hearing Tuesday night charged with attempting to kidnap the teenager in the 1700 block of De Sousa Place.
He has also been charged with assault causing bodily harm in connection with the attack on the other teen, also 17, who assisted her friend.
Though the teen knows the man who attempted to abduct her, the two are not related and were never in a relationship, according to Sgt. Dean Jantzen, spokesman for Saanich police.
“It’s entirely possible they’ve been in the same room at the same time,” he said.
Police arrested Chong Tuesday night after tracking the van’s licence plate to a nearby U-Haul outlet.
The investigation also indicates the attacker may have ditched some clothing when he ran away, police report.
Investigators believe the man’s clothing was discarded on Hillside Avenue between Shelbourne and Doncaster.
Officers searched for the items, but have now turned to the public to help track them down.
“They were likely discarded on the sidewalk or near the street,” Jantzen said. “Someone has probably picked them up by now.”
Chong is also charged with assault with a weapon on both teens, and having his face masked with a wool hat while committing an indictable offence.
He is to appear in Victoria provincial court this morning.
Police are asking anyone who may have picked up clothing from Hillside Avenue on Monday night to contact them. Saanich police detectives can be reached at 250-475-4356.
