RFP for WEBSITE REDESIGN CONTRACT

The University of Victoria Graduate Students' Society (GSS) is a non-profit society serving graduate students studying at UVIC. We represent over 2500 students pursuing their masters or doctoral degrees. Our members range in age from 25 to 70, are international and domestic students, and are often parents, working part time or studying by distance. The GSS provides extended health and dental benefits, social and cultural activities, peer support and maintains a facility, including meeting rooms and a full service restaurant for its members. Our members use our website for a wide variety of information. For this short term contract, we are seeking a designer who can improve the usability and update the appearance of our organizations website.
Reports to: GSS Executive Director
Works with: Director of Communications, office staff
Liaises with: UVIC Computing Services regarding database and uploading requirements
Internet Background & Objectives
The GSS has a single domain website at
http://gss.uvic.ca which is hosted on the UVIC server.
Currently, the staff update the site using Adobe Contribute. A template is used to keep design consistency.
The GSS is seeking to update the look of the site, and upgrade our ability in terms of video, bulletin board, and multi-media content.
Scope of the project
- Create a new ‘look’ for the website, and a set of templates with a consistent design for a variety of types of pages
- Create templates that have a consistent feel, but serve a variety of purposes (front page current news, events calendar, access to society documents access (minutes, bylaws), program information, form downloads.
- Ensure new site facilitates easy use of templates for daily content management by GSS staff
- Provide recommendations to the GSS on software that will enable the staff to update templates, add video, animation or interactive elements such as discussion boards
- Assist GSS staff to reorganize and transfer current website content to new format
- Upload site to UVIC server
Experience required
Demonstrated experience in website design
Demonstrated knowledge of web design programming, database SQL management, content management programs
Demonstrated ability to work with non-programming noobs to create an easy-to-manage website
Contract details
This is a one time, short term contract. Candidates should be available to work on this project as soon as June 15, 2009 and able to complete the project by August 1, 2009.
